Career Potential/Growth

0

Location

4

Co-worker Competence

2

Work Environment

-3

I currently work at Menards, and I have to admit it is the worst work environment i've ever had to deal with. While my co-workers are typically pretty nice, the management is corrupt and likes to play favorites a lot. They are seriously write-up happy, and over all complete jerks.

I've only been there since may, and i'm already getting to the point where I want to call it quits. Even though the pay is decent, I just can't stand working in such a negative environment. The stress alone has been causing me to get sick, well that and the fact that they never turn on the "big fans" because they dont like to pay the bills.

I say big fans because from what i've been told we don't even technically have A/C. Just these giant fans randomly placed throughout the store.

Both the guests and employees complain of the heat. It's been so bad some days, i've had to go home early because i've thrown up from over heating. It was 90 outside and we didn't even have the fans on. Completely and utterly ridiculous.

While I could go on and on and on about reasons why I hate this place, I think i'll just sum it all up to the management sucks, the job itself sucks, and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone.

Co-worker Competence

5

Work Environment

5

it seems like on the store level, some stores are great and some stores aren't. i worked for a couple years in a store with many great people. on that level, i liked it. I've heard horror stories from other employees are other stores but i can't speak for that. As far as the general office is concerned, they are a complete and absolute joke. first of all, they are paying people with college degrees peanuts. in order to make enough money, you have to sacrifice your life, which i mean work 50 plus hours a week. every personnel policy they made while i was there took the money directly out of the pocket of the employees, without formally saying it. in all honesty, the g.o. micromanages to such a degree that i don't see why anybody with a degree would want to work there. most people with a degree want to be able to use skills and creativity to make their own mark. at menards, you are told exactly what to do and exactly how to do it. the try to pimp the profit sharing bonus alot, but in order for it to be a "bonus", it should be money that isn't necessary to make a living. without the bonus money, nobody trying to support their family could do anything. they have the mt program in which you learn to be a manager, then relocate through the ranks as you promote. yes, some people probably like the change of scenery and such. however, most people have friends and family, and can't move at the g.o.'s willing. from what the older employees say, the pay used to be great. menards used to pay much more than almost anywhere else. hearing them talk about the 70s and 80s, they made tons of money. now, menards is not very good pay at all, especially for the amount of hours worked. the pay increases do not make up for the burden of relocation in the mt program, and that creates high turnover in that position. Overall, the hardest part of me leaving was the cool people I worked with. they were all great. the g.o. was awful and i'd change many things about it, but i do appreciate the opportunity to gain the work experience.

If you ask me, the only reason to work at menards is for the pay. That's it. As a part-time cashier, I made 8.80 to start and 2.50 extra PER HOUR on weekends. Good deal, right!? Now i make 9.10/hour after a year of working there. So if I play my cards right and try to work mostly on weekends, I'm banking 11.60/hour. I'm in college, so that's better than working somewhere for minimum wage. Just saying, don't expect to feel enriched by the work OR the rude customers.

I applied at Menards for a cashiering job. A simple part-time job that I had lots of experience in. At my interview, I was so nervous because I wanted the job so bad. What the hell was I thinking? During the interview they asked me, "Do you know anything about power tools?" I honestly answered, "No. Not a THING!" They ask, "Do you know anything about plants?" Again, I said no. "Well, you're hired." I thought I was cashiering in the garden center at first, but no... They were having me on the floor in Hardware and Garden. Two things I know NOTHING ABOUT! At first, I thought, eh, over time, I'll learn it and I'm sure they'll train me nice like all my past jobs! No. They throw you out in that open water and feed you to the sharks. I have never been so unhappy at a job in my entire life. They expect you know everything right away. When I asked questions, my manager was so rude to me because I didn't know the answers. They told me to put the "freight" away. What the FUCK is FREIGHT? It's pretty much stocking the shelves. Well why couldn't they tell me that? It was so boring and "guests" would come up to me and ask me questions about things I had no idea what they were talking about, so I would try to go and find another employee to help them but I could never find one fucking person! I swear I was the only fucking worker in the store! So all these customers are attacking me, I have NO FUCKING headset so I am doing laps around the store. Omg, it's HORRIBLE!! HOURS ARE HORRIBLE!! 11A to 10P every weekend night?? Nooooo fucking wayyy... Sorry!! And with a manager who is a dick and unwilling to help you and when you ask questions, gets snotty with you, yeah.. Not good. I quit on my third day. I hate Menards. I give everyone there so much respect for dealing with it. I have never ever quit a job... And this I knew from day 1 was not going to work out. When I would clock in, all employees were just whining how they hated it and wanted to go home.

Don't work at Menards.

I write this review as a casual-part time team member. I am in school taking 16 credits a semester, while doing this I can work pretty much whenever I want. From working at Menards for the past year, if I were a full-time employee or in any manager position Menards would get near all -5's. All of the reviews on this website are close to accurate. 85% of the store managers are a complete joke. In my opinion, that is part of the reason the turn-over rate is SO high. As a store manager, I would want to take care of my employees... but that IS NOT the case. Management spends SO much time making work for team-members, sometimes I feel the store as a whole is forgotten about. Take a stroll through your local Menards and see how many sharp, bright people are willing to help you out. The answer is not many. As far as the benefits go, forget about it (at least a part-time worker). If I wanted health insurance through Menards, I would be pretty much working every hour just for health insurance. Every holiday each team-member receives a "gift"-- sometimes this gift is a toy car, sometimes a super awesome Menards hat... Thanks for thinking of me but don't advertise the Menards race car to me! JOHN MENARD- QUIT WASTING MONEY ON GIFTS FOR EMPLOYEES ADVERTISING "MENARDS" RACING TEAM! HOW ABOUT INSTED YOU GIVE ME HEALTH INSURANCE FOR A DECENT COST?! Alright, sorry had to get that out. Overall Menards is an absolute fucking joke. Unless you happen to be a part-time employee, or a human-resource manager. Thinking long term career? Stay clear.

It's not a bad job for a while. You don't want to get trapped here for the long hall. The start up pay is pretty decent, but if you move up to a manager's position you pretty much get screwed. I would say for a part-time worker it is ok, but overall they treat their employees pretty bad.

Work Environment

-2

I worked at Menards for over 5 years after I graduated from college with a bachelors degree. I can safely say that I have never been happier to quit a job ever in my life. When I first started I did like my job but that was before I learned what assholes run the company.

The treat their employees like shit on a daily basis by spying on them with the eye in the sky or the camera system installed to keep an eye on theft- Bullshit!!! They installed that camera system to keep an eye on their employees all the time. I have no problem with making sure we are working and helping guests but when it comes to degrading employees that is when I get concerned.

There are many great employees at Menards who are great people but sooner or later we all get cranky and turn into jerks because we get treated like crap by our guest, store managers and general office. So to all those customers who shop their if you ever get a cranky employee please take into consideration that we are overworked and under-appreciated!!! I mean hell they expect their managers to work every other weekend...okay that's fine, but work 14 to 16 hours each day that is just nuts. Plus we only take on average 1 lunch break for 30 minutes and then aren't ever allowed to leave the damn building. I mean seriously what the hell could possibly happen in 30 minutes that someone else in that damn store couldn't handle....I don't know maybe those store managers that walk around the store all the time.

Then you can't even call in sick without a doctors note or you get written up and possibly suspended for 3 days without pay. In addition, we always get yelled at for not making our sales in the department but constantly get yelled at about making payroll, which means send people home. Well how the hell do you sell things to guests without employees there to wait on them.

Furthermore, they expect their store managers to work 55 hours a week. Then they wonder why they have to constantly demote store managers for having inappropriate relationships with fellow employees. Hell I had 2 different store managers and they both had affairs with front end team members in the store. What kind of family company is this to work for, yeah the money might be good but your marriage and family will not survive if you work there.

It's been a year and half since I have worked there and that place still burns my ass. If the general office only knew how to respect their employees they would get such a higher return out of them. They just don't seem to understand that by treating people good they will in return have a happy environment for people to work which will lead to higher sales. The day I walked out of Menards I felt incredibly thrilled to not have to walk into that shithole the next day, but felt truly sorry for those people who were left behind.

So if you are an employee working there right now....I hope you read this and know that there is hope for a better job and life beyond that crappy place called Menards.

I was involved in the manager trainee program. This porgram was a farce. It was nothing more than hard labor and self study. I learned nothing about being a manager, although the program requires a college degree. As a manager trainee you get no repect at all. Each department hates you because they get charged for your salary, and that comes out of each managers bottom line, which reduces their end of year bonus. They treat you poorly because the managers are uneducated and in constant fear of their job. They do not want you to take their job. There is no job security in this company, and they use cameras and microphones to "catch" their employees doing something wrong. It's funny how they don't catch you doing something right. I do not recommend this company to anyone unless you are a student and need a part-time job, until they fire you.
