If you are a caring person whose passionate about your students, or people in general--run, don't walk away from this place. They talk the talk about changing lives but it's a big smokescreen! Everything that's regurgitated back to you will be about the numbers, the numbers, the statistics, etc. Students are treated like crap and shoved into tiny molds. No one listens to the individual because they think they've heard it all before. If a student shows hesitation about spending $60 grand for a college "education," they claim it's an objection that hasn't been uncovered. Couldn't be that the student woke up and realized a college education shouldn't cost them 60 grand!!! If that same student says they have concerns about being that far in debt, we're instructed to remind them that they don't need to start repaying their student loans until 6 months after they leave school (most likely) or graduate (only 23% do) and that once they get out, they'll have this great job with more pay so they'll have no problem with those student loans. Well, the NUMBERS and STATISTICS just came out in December and some 52% of online students default on their loans within 3 years of those loans coming due. So, not only are we giving them a subpar education at best, we're going to be responsible for their horrific credit score, as well.
The pay is a joke...everyone makes a different amount of money in that place and no one can figure out what the starting salaries are even based upon. I started at $35K but I am friends with someone who started out at $45K and is now up to $56K.
The management is such a joke. It's University of Phoenix all over again. They promote ONLY on numbers and as a result, they have a slew of immature, childish directors who are babies with no experience in the workforce much less in management breaking the laws left and right. My boss is a 23 year old kid fresh out of college and this is his first job. He is a misogynist who hates the women on our team and it's blatantly obvious. He blatantly breaks the law in his harassment of the ladies on our team and as a guy who has to sit back and watch it, it disgusts me. He comes to work all beaten up after one weekend and rather than being demoted for no call/no showing that Monday, his boss and all the other Directors think it's just adorable to tease him about all the cuts all over his face and hands. It's just gross.
The career potential is great if you are male, can wrangle loads of students into thousands upon thousands of dollars in student loan debt and do so while drinking the "changing lives" kool aid when in actuality, you're really screwing these people for years if not for life. If you can sign a ton of students up for "school" and not care a single bit about them all while playing the boys club game that exists in that place, you have plenty of potential! Of course you're going to hit the glass ceiling pretty quickly because there's no room for you to move up beyond a second director unless your boss quits or gets fired.
If it isn't obvious, there's no respect in that place. Not for those of us who truly do care about changing these people's lives and doing their job well. If you can come in, put your head down, dial and sign up as many students as possible and show its all about the numbers...you'll move up in no time. It's really all about the illusion so there's no room for people with a heart and morality and passion for the actual human being behind the number.
Benefits are shit. I mean total shit for a company this size and we pay out the ass for them!
Location is convenient and central for now but when our offices move to the east valley, it's gonna be a heck of a journey!
All in all I don't think I have anything to add that hasn't already been said on this site about this company. If you must accept employment here, just know that you won't be valued for changing lives, you'll be valued for how many students you can get to accept their title IV funding which is 80% of this company's revenue. Also, you won't be valued for caring about the students only for how well you beat them into submission when they sit down with a parent or spouse or a calculator and figure out for themselves that it's a ludicris amount of money being pissed away on a subpar "education."
If you can play the game, kiss the right ass, don't rock the boat and do everything you're told without questioning the integrity of what you're being asked to do, you might have a fighting chance. Of course you probably won't so your best bet is to move along and accept employment at a company where your good values, judgement and integrity won't be feared for bringing the whole organization down rather, they'll be rewarded for keeping the company in good standing.
